Monday night I dragged myself out into the cold to be a part of the “Faces of Asheville” Pre-Exhibit fundraising event at The Orange Peel. Jen Bowen, the organizer, had asked if I could perform a song with my good buddies Snake Oil Medicine Show. I was happy to oblige. I got there a little late, but I did get to see the Libravado Sisters aerial acrobats, who were quite impressive. I was excited that one of their acts was to a song by the Luminescent Orchestrii, dear friends of mine and one of my most favorite bands in the world who had just wowed me the night before at the Grey Eagle.
Before the Snakes set, Caroline and I warmed up backstage. It was so nice to play music with her. We have such a long history together. I have fond memories of Mad Tea Party and Snake Oil playing shows together up and down the east coast, from Florida to Maine, all the way to Jamaica, from dingy bars to fabulous festivals, with lots of parties and living room jams in between. Jason was part of SOMS when I met him, and the story of our community and our loves and heartbreaks and lasting friendships is rich and poignant.
Anyway, the show was short and sweet (30 minutes or so). I got to sing and play my flaming ukulele on one song. I have to say it was a treat to plug in and hear my new uke through that huge sound system.
Then POOF, it was over. Another experience to file away.
I didn’t really get any photos. I had sported my hot pink bloomers and some new tights which I promptly got a hole in. So you may not see these again…
