Arctic Safari: Day Three. The Arctic Safari crew drove deep into the wilds of Pennsylvania for our
Saturday night performance at the Unique Bar & Grill, which is a certainly one-of-a-kind place. Unique has a real down-home vibe, with loyal patrons that seemed ready for just about anything. The weather was brutally cold and a little snowy, just like we had imagined it would be.
We got totally silly that night. Being that the Unique show was the very middle date of the tour, we all kept asking each other if we were peaking yet. It seemed appropriate to peak at a place with “Summit” in the name, huh? Jason kept teasing Matt, whose
years in London, England and Oakland, California has not quite prepared him for the rough culture of a dive bar out in the middle of nowhere. He was worried how the locals would react to his “fancy accent”. But, despite being out of his comfort zone, he really handled himself like a champ. Tippy Canoe of course befriended everyone there, to the point of calling people by name from the stage as she played. She even donned a beard at one point in order to fit in more with the bar’s burly clientele.
Mad Tea Party put on on a rockin’ program, though I was starting to really suffer the effects of a
cold I was trying (unsuccessfully) to fight off. Jason quoted the theme from “Deliverance” during his solos much to Matt’s chagrin. There was some really interesting dancing. Two people fell off of bar stools at different points in the evening. Towards the end of the show, Tippy joined us for a couple of songs, as did Denny, a regular at Unique who happened to have a jew’s harp and even knew how to play it. Much fun was had by all.
We stayed in an apartment above the bar. And, once again, we were up way too late. Arctic Safari Tour is not for the weak.
